On a dry plateau in southern Peru, enormous figures are marked into the ground: a hummingbird, a monkey, a spider, and straight lines that continue for kilometers.
They were created between roughly 500 BC and AD 500 by removing the dark surface stones to expose the pale soil underneath.
Because the region receives almost no rain and very little wind, the designs have survived for two thousand years.
Their purpose remains uncertain.
Proposals include astronomical calendars, ritual pathways, and markers associated with water sources.
Most of the figures cannot be recognized from ground level, which is why they were not documented until aircraft began flying over the area.
