In southwest Bolivia lies the largest salt flat in the world, a plain of white crust covering more than ten thousand square kilometers.

It formed when an ancient lake evaporated, leaving a layer of salt several meters thick in places.

During the rainy season, a shallow film of water spreads across the surface.

Because the ground is exceptionally flat, the water forms a nearly perfect mirror, and the sky is reflected so precisely that the horizon disappears.

Satellites use the site to calibrate their instruments for this reason.

Beneath the crust lies a substantial share of the world's lithium, which has attracted considerable commercial interest.
