Deep in the Peruvian Amazon flows a river hot enough to kill anything that falls into it.

For generations, local communities regarded it as sacred, but geologists were skeptical, because the nearest active volcano is hundreds of kilometers away.

A researcher who visited the site in 2011 confirmed that the water reaches ninety-four degrees Celsius along a stretch of roughly six kilometers.

The current explanation is that rainwater falling in the Andes travels through a deep fault system, absorbs heat, and emerges here.

The river is not volcanic at all.

It is now under pressure from illegal logging, and conservation groups are attempting to secure formal protection.
