運び出された35万冊
ティンブクトゥの写本救出は実際の出来事です。マリ北部のこの都市は14〜16世紀にサンコーレ大学などを擁する学術都市として栄え、アラビア語を中心とする写本が多数残されました。その大半は公的機関ではなく個人・家族が所蔵しており、アフメド・ババ研究所などが収集を進めていました。2012年、イスラム武装勢力が北部を制圧し、聖廟の破壊などが行われたことから、アブデル・カデル・ハイダラらが中心となって写本の域外搬出を計画。金属トランクなどに詰め、少量ずつ車両やニジェール川の舟でバマコへ移送しました。搬出された写本は約35万点とされ、大半が保全されましたが、高温多湿のバマコでの保管は劣化リスクが高く、その後も国際的な支援による保存事業が続いています。

For centuries, the city of Timbuktu in Mali was a center of learning, and scholars accumulated a wealth of manuscripts on astronomy, medicine, law and poetry.
Many were never held in public libraries; families preserved them privately, passing them down through generations in wooden chests.
When armed groups occupied the city in 2012, librarians concluded that the collections would be destroyed.
They responded by hiding the manuscripts in ordinary containers and transporting them out of the city, a few at a time, by road and by river.
Roughly three hundred and fifty thousand documents were removed.
Most survived, and conservation specialists are still stabilizing them today.
