On the Indonesian island of Java, a volcano produces a sight that appears almost artificial.
Sulfuric gases escape from cracks in the rock at extremely high temperatures, and when they contact the air they ignite, generating flames that are a vivid electric blue.
The flames are invisible in daylight and can only be observed at night.
The same volcano contains a crater lake of concentrated acid.
Miners climb the slope after dark, break off solid yellow sulfur, and carry loads of up to ninety kilograms down the mountain.
They earn considerably more than most local workers, but the majority operate with no protective equipment apart from a damp cloth held over the mouth.
