In a dry district of northern India stands a structure that looks like an upside-down pyramid.
Chand Baori is a stepwell, dug around the ninth century to secure water through the long dry season.
More than three thousand narrow steps descend thirteen storeys in a precise geometric pattern down every wall.
As the water level fell, residents simply walked further down.
The design served a second purpose as well: the air at the bottom stays several degrees cooler than the surface, so the well also functioned as a place to escape the heat.
Hundreds of similar stepwells were constructed across the region, but many were abandoned once modern pipes were installed.
