In 1974, farmers in Shaanxi Province, China, were digging a well during a drought.

Instead of water, they found fragments of hardened clay, including a human head.

They reported the discovery to local authorities, and archaeologists were assigned to examine the site.

What they eventually uncovered was an army of roughly eight thousand life-sized figures, buried to accompany the first emperor of China.

No two faces are alike.

The figures were originally painted in bright colors, but most of the pigment deteriorated soon after being exposed to air.

For this reason, a considerable portion of the site remains deliberately unexcavated, and archaeologists are waiting until they acquire methods that can preserve what they find.
