In Meghalaya, one of the wettest regions on earth, wooden bridges rot within a few years.
The Khasi people devised an alternative.
They guide the flexible roots of a rubber tree across a river, supporting them with a hollow palm trunk until they reach the opposite bank, where they are directed back into the soil.
The process demands patience, because a bridge requires twenty to twenty-five years to become strong enough to carry people.
Once it is established, it continues to grow, and some are believed to be several centuries old.
A British officer documented them as early as 1844.
Unlike a wooden bridge, a living one becomes more durable with age rather than less.
