In the early 1990s, engineers at a Japanese railway company faced a difficult problem.
When a high-speed train entered a tunnel, it pushed a wall of air ahead of it, and a loud boom escaped from the far end.
Residents living nearby complained about the noise, and the company had to address it promptly.
Eiji Nakatsu, the engineer who led the design team, was also an avid bird watcher.
He had observed that a kingfisher can dive from air into water almost without a splash, thanks to its long wedge-shaped beak.
His team tested various shapes and eventually confirmed that the beak was nearly ideal.
They applied that shape to the nose of the train.
The result was remarkable: the train was quieter, and it consumed considerably less electricity than the previous model.
