At the Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland, there's a penguin with a very special status.

Sir Nils Olav, a king penguin, is not just any bird - he's an honorary member of the Norwegian King's Guard and holds the military rank of brigadier.

This unusual tradition began in 1972 when the Norwegian King's Guard visited the zoo during a military tattoo performance in Edinburgh.

The soldiers were so impressed by the penguins that they adopted one and named him after their commander.

Every few years when the Guard returns to Edinburgh, they promote Sir Nils to a higher rank in a formal ceremony.

The current Sir Nils is actually the third penguin to hold the position, but the tradition continues.

In 2016, a 50-member delegation from Norway attended his promotion ceremony, and he was even knighted by the Norwegian king.
