In 1991, NASA conducted a remarkable experiment by sending 2,478 tiny jellyfish into space aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia.
These moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) were not just unusual passengers; they were part of an important scientific study.
Scientists wanted to observe how these creatures, which use gravity to determine up and down on Earth, would develop in the microgravity environment of space.
The jellyfish reproduced in space, creating over 60,000 jellyfish babies.
When they returned to Earth, the space-born jellyfish had trouble orienting themselves.
They could swim, but often bumped into the walls of their tanks, suggesting that their gravity-sensing organs had developed differently.
This experiment provided valuable insights into how gravity affects development and balance in living organisms.
