The chocolate chip cookie, America's favorite treat, was invented by accident in 1930.
Ruth Wakefield, owner of the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts, was making chocolate cookies for her guests.
According to the popular story, she ran out of baker's chocolate and decided to chop up a Nestlé semi-sweet chocolate bar, expecting it to melt completely and create chocolate cookies.
Instead, the chocolate pieces kept their shape, creating the first chocolate chip cookies.
Her guests loved them so much that the recipe became famous.
Eventually, Wakefield made a deal with Nestlé: they could print her recipe on their chocolate packaging in exchange for a lifetime supply of chocolate.
This accidental invention became so popular that in 1997, Massachusetts officially named the chocolate chip cookie its state cookie.
