In 1968, a scientist named Spencer Silver at the 3M company was trying to develop a super-strong adhesive.

Instead, he accidentally created a weak, pressure-sensitive adhesive that didn't seem useful.

For years, Silver promoted his invention within the company, but couldn't find a practical application.

Then in 1974, another 3M scientist named Art Fry had a problem.

While singing in his church choir, the paper bookmarks in his hymnal kept falling out.

Remembering Silver's adhesive, Fry realized it would be perfect for creating bookmarks that would stick without damaging the pages.

This idea evolved into the Post-it Note, which was finally introduced in 1980 and became one of the most popular office supplies worldwide.
